You’ve likely seen the headlines:

  • “SEO is Dead.”

  • “AI Has Taken Over SEO.”

  • “It’s Not SEO Anymore, It’s GEO.”

But in this post, I'll share the actual truth—and what you really need to know about how this impacts your business.

SEO is free organic traffic to your website.

What Is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s action steps you can take on your website and online presence so your website shows up in Google and Bing search results when potential clients are searching for someone just like you.

Just because you have a website doesn’t mean Google knows it exists—or what it’s about. You have to tell it. That’s what SEO does. And best of all? It brings free, organic traffic to your site.

Think of SEO as building a digital paver walkway to your business. Each piece of content—each keyword, blog post, photo caption, and page—acts as a paver. The more pavers you lay, the clearer the path for Google to send your ideal clients your way.

So when someone searches “Interior Designer Atlanta” or “best white paint for a north-facing room,” your website or blog shows up.

But Wait… Isn’t SEO Dead?

Let’s get back to those dramatic headlines. They’re meant to hook you in—and once they do, the article goes one of two ways:

  1. It leads to the same truth I’m about to share, or

  2. It overwhelms you with jargon so you feel like you have to hire an expensive SEO agency to keep up.

Here’s the truth:

SEO is NOT dead. In fact, it’s more alive—and more important—than ever. Yes, SEO has changed. But it hasn’t disappeared. It’s simply evolved, shifting which “pavers” matter most.

Google Search Advocate John Mueller recently reaffirmed SEO’s importance, even in the age of AI. When asked about AI Overviews, he said: “People wishing SEO would go away are missing out on the value of the work that SEOs do.”

What’s Changed with SEO and how it impacts Interior Designers?

SEO is evolving. Think of SEO as standing for “Seen Everywhere Online.” In today’s world, your presence across platforms—like Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest—can support your website’s SEO. Google is watching it all.

Here are three major updates:

  1. Helpful content is king. Content has always been important, but the shift is now content that is truly helpful is ranked higher. Think quality over quanitity. FAQs on your site, blog posts that answer real questions, and detailed service pages are more important than ever.

  2. Your authority matters more. Having your name out there was always a part of SEO, but now it's more so. Have you won awards? Been published? Interviewed on a podcast? These credibility markers (“proof of experience”) now play a bigger role in how Google ranks you.

  3. Social content counts. This is one of the biggest changes as social media posts never used to count until July 2025. But now, they do. Even your Instagram captions help SEO. Google is learning to read and index more content types—so use them wisely!

According to Neil Patel, a leading SEO expert:

“SEO isn’t going anywhere. It’s just evolving to include a seamless and enjoyable user experience.”

The ROI of SEO for Interior Designers Is Mind-Blowing

If you have ever wondered: How to make marketing easier for my design business? How do I get interior design clients without paid ads? How to get featured in magazines as a designer? Implementing SEO “pavers” can bring you:

  • More ideal clients

  • Media features

  • Collaboration and partnership opportunities

  • A steady stream of leads without ads or cold outreach

And again, SEO is free to implement. It’s just knowledge—and that’s why people try to make it sound harder than it really is and companies charge thousands and thousands of dollars to implement making you feel like it's outside of your abilities, when in fact it's not. SEO is much easier than it's made out to be.

My Story: SEO Is the Reason My Business Took Off

When I started my interior design company, Happy Place Interiors, I leaned into SEO. It started working within months. It wasn’t instant, but it was powerful. I have been raking on Google Page 1 for years and now I show up in Ai Overviews. And I have never paid for an ads and I have a small Instagram following. But I am consistenyly busy working with my ideal client. All of my ress opportunities have come from my SEO. And 10+ years later, I still get ideal clients through organic search—without paid ads.

SEO is the strongest and simplest way to market your design business long-term. Once set up, it works for you 24/7.
